.Last Monday, Chris Evans launched the Radio 2 short story writing competition - 500 Words. This is a terrific competition and I have saved two narrative writing units to coincide with it. This week we launch our own narrative writing with a visit from a story teller. We will follow this with the 'live lesson'. I opted to not do this lesson live last Monday as, by following it at our own pace, we get the time we need to complete activities.
The deadline for this year's competition is Thursday February 23rd, the week after half term. Your child will have completed a short story at school which they may enter at home. The entry rules include a guarantee from the adult that they will be available for the award show, this is not something I can guarantee so I would ask parents to go online with their child to enter if they wish to. I will give pupils time to type their story at school and email it to themselves as the online form has to be completed in one session. The link below takes you to the Radio 2 site which includes further details about the competition, the link to enter, the top 50 stories from previous years. plus videos giving guidance and inspiration.

In maths this term we have been refreshing our knowledge of fractions as well as learning to find percentages of amounts. We will be continuing our study of fractions as well as looking at multi-step problems. For homework, each week a short ten minute set of questions will be sent home, with additional challenge questions. As well as this sheet, it is essential that all pupils know all tables including the inverse (division) facts.
Following the whole staff training on Talk For Writing - we have been learning a whole mentor text in Literacy before writing our own. We started with a discussion piece based on Doctor Who. We will continue with narrative linking our work with Radio 2's 500 word competition. Our topic has luckily coincided with our Literacy - Space. Starting with the Earth, Sun and Moon we will move on to research our own feature of the Universe. This is a really exciting competition; the live lesson was really inspiring. Every single story written in class was original - which is lucky as originality is one of the judging criteria. Now all stories have been typed I'll begin the posting of stories. Some pupils may need a third edit so this process may take some time. Good luck to everyone entering the competition. A Dare to Scare “Okay this one’s for both of you, I dare you to go to the abandoned Mental Asylum down the road!” Zack yelled at both the girls “I am up for it!” I said trying to look as positive as I could. “I’m not sure.” Zoe squealed as quiet as a mouse. ”don’t worry Zack’s coming to aren’t you?” I said “of course I am I would never leave you two girls alone!” laughed Zack “fine!” trembled Zoe.
As soon as I got home I asked my mum if I could go for a sleepover “alright but take your phone with you, “she sighed “thanks mum!” I said excitedly. My friends and I arrived at the abandoned Mental Asylum. It was 5:30 and it was getting very dark. “Guys please can we go back.” Zoe whispered “NO!”I laughed “Don’t be such a Scaredy Cat!” Zoe started trembling so much she had Goosebumps. I carefully pushed the door while the others tip-toed in behind me. “What’s that?” asked Zoe “and what’s that?” “That is a cage door so the mental people couldn’t get out and that is a puddle of blood!” I teased. “No it’s not Sophia don’t worry Zoe we are both here.” Zack said kindly to sooth Zoe’s nerves “HELLOOOOOOO!” Zack yelled at the top his lungs. Which only made Zoe worse. Every so often we heard screams from different rooms. As we walked on it seemed to get louder and louder. All of a sudden we heard the biggest blood-curdling scream, which didn’t sound like all the others, it sounded like it was somebody who was still alive, today! It came again but this time Zoe screamed and fell to the floor. “Zack….” I whispered “she has fainted that’s all we need in situation like this.” Zack whispered back. We saw an old hospital bed and put Zoe carefully on it. As I pushed it along the wheels screeched, creaked and jolted. “Zack….” I said as we could both see a dark figure in the distance. “Just stay still.” He said reassuringly. The figure moved closer until Zoe opened her eyes and took a big breathe. “Guys what happened I feel really dizzy!” Zoe yelled “you will be okay.” I whispered as I shone my torch onto the dark figure in the distance. I could just make out a nurse but the nurse looked different, unusual. I realised what was different about her, it was that she had an apron with blood over it. “RUN!” I yelled as loud as I could. ”She has us cornered!” Zack said in such a rush. All of a sudden I saw an open window and I stood making my plan. ”JUMP…..OUT…OF…THE….WINDOW!” I mouthed to them. We jumped out the window and ran for our lives home. “Sophia….WAKE UP! “My mum yelled up the stairs. I realised it was a dream. I saw an apron with blood on….. I had never thought the same about mental asylum ever again…….. |
